What is World Day of Persons with Disabilities?
: The International Day of Persons with Disabilities or World Day of People with Disabilities is one of the international commemorations designated by the United Nations (UN). It is celebrated every year on December 3.
It is a commemoration day that aims to check the status of rehabilitation and welfare of people with disabilities around the world, promote understanding of disability issues, and secure the rights and assistive devices for people with disabilities to live more humane lives. It was designated as this date when the World Plan of Action on Persons with Disabilities was adopted at the 37th UN General Assembly on December 3, 1981.
The UN declared 1981 the 'International Year of Disabled Persons' and the period from 1983 to 1992 the 'Rehabilitation Decade'. Since then, the International Day of Disabled Persons has been officially observed since December 3, 1992.
On this day, commemorative events are held in countries around the world, including South Korea, the United States, and North Korea. However, in South Korea, the Day of Disabled Persons (April 20 every year) designated by the South Korean government is more well-known, so it receives relatively less attention.
